Fireworks in China: a thing of the past for Lunar New Year celebrations?

For generations, people have been setting off fireworks and firecrackers in celebration of the Chinese New Year in China. Every night around the day of New Year, the sky would be constantly lit up by fireworks, and explosions would fill the nights. However, due to environmental issues, civilians are not allowed to set off fireworks in most of China anymore. A few years ago, a ban was placed on fireworks so many had to find replacements for such celebrations. Major debates have been led by two sides: either supporting that the tradition must be kept, since it has been in action for generations, and it has to stay that way, or that the tradition is obsolete, since it decimates the surrounding environment, exposing everyone to fire hazards and air pollution.
